Does it seem that your college students don’t read their texts before class the way that they used to in the olden days? Do you want to learn some practical strategies that will enhance your students’ motivation for reading? This presentation will discuss the reasons why students disregard the assigned readings. The presenters will also share current motivational and strategic ways to promote student learning across disciplines and some practical techniques for literacy learning assessment. The workshop will help professors as they prepare for their summer and fall courses.

Presenters:

Dr. Gwynne Ash is an Associate Professor of Reading in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her research and teaching interests include vocabulary instruction, comprehension strategy instruction, and critical literacy. She also serves as a Faculty Senator from the College of Education.

Dr. Jodi Holschuh is an Associate Professor of Reading and Developmental Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her research and teaching interests include students’ beliefs about learning, making the transition from high school to college learning, strategies for academic success, word learning, and motivation
