June 7 @ 9 a.m. ODEL's Summer Institute Keynote Speaker - Dr. Patricia Young, "The Practice of Culture in Resilient Online and Hybrid Contexts"
Description:

The Office of Distance and Extended Learning (ODEL) is proud to present guest speaker, Dr. Patricia Young, as part of our first annual Summer Institute event! The theme of this event is Texas State Strong: Creating Resilient Courses. For more information about our Summer Institute, go to https://www.distancelearning.txstate.edu/faculty/Summer-Institute0.html.

This keynote session is open to all university faculty and staff.

Dr. Patricia Young is an associate professor and the Program Director for Elementary Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Young is also an educational technologist and software developer. She examines culture as a “design construct in the development of culture-based information and communication technologies” (Young, 2021). Her expertise in instructional design & technology and culture has led to the development of a framework for guiding the build of culture-based information and communication technologies –– the Culture Based Model. Her latest book, Human Specialization in Design and Technology: The Current Wave for Learning, Culture, Industry and Beyond (2021) examines recent trends in teaching and learning: standardization, personalization, customization, and specialization and spotlights those that specifically target human needs for learning success. Her work speaks directly to the notion of resiliency. Learn more about Dr. Young and her work at her website, http://patriciayoung.com/.

Her presentation, "The Practice of Culture in Resilient Online and Hybrid Contexts" is described as:

The integration of culture in resilient online and hybrid contexts takes careful consideration in the planning process of teaching and instruction. This presentation connects the research and practice of designing culture-based instructional technologies and the implications for diversity, equity and inclusion.
