Description:

You are invited to a Faculty Showcase event on Nov 15, 2013 at noon on the topic of Research on Using ePortfolio, Rubrics and Reflective Writing. The event is sponsored by Instructional Technologies Support (ITS). Our featured speaker is Dr. M. Alejandra Sorto who used the university's new ePortfolio system with her doctoral Math Education students as part of a research study on the use of reflective writing and its effect on student learning.

The research project is a joint effort between Dr. Sorto and an Instructional Technologies Support team that includes Dr. Liz Strand, Ms. Ann Jensen, Dr. Rui Zeng, Dr. Salwa Khan and Ms. Yaoling Wang.

Sorto is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at Texas State University, who teaches courses in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics and Research Methods.

The research project involved 15 doctoral students in a Research Methods class who were asked to reflect on how they had constructed their statement of research and on the research methods they had selected. Dr. Sorto used a rubric that was shared with students to evaluate the reflective writing assignments.

In this session, Dr. Sorto will discuss some of the preliminary findings from the study and detail the challenges faced by her, by her students and by the research team during the research project. Following the presentation, you will have an opportunity to ask questions about the project.

This is a brown bag event, so bring your lunch. Water, soft drinks and sweet and salty snacks will be provided. Plan to arrive by 11:45am or earlier as the program will begin promptly at noon.
