This seminar was specifically designed to prepare students for taking their TExES ESL Supplemental Certification Exam, making those individuals regarded as, "highly qualified," by potential employers. Minda Morren López, Assistant Professor of Reading, graduated with her Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2008. Prior to academia, she served as a Bilingual, Dual Language, and ESL teacher for 6 years in Houston ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and the Pan American School of Bahia in Brazil. She also taught ESL in the Center for Continuing Studies at Rice University and at the University of the Incarnate Word and was a Bilingual/ESL Specialist for Education Service Center, Region 20 in San Antonio. She holds a B.A. in Art from The University of Texas at Austin and an M. Ed. in Second Language Education from the University of Houston. Minda conducts mixed methods research and is interested in language and literacy ideologies of children, parents, and teachers. She also studies classroom discourse centered around literacy practices, the language and literacy acquisition of bilingual children, and literacy policy for multilingual students. Current research projects include a refinement of her “Teachers’ Language Ideologies” survey instrument, a Critical Discourse Analysis of discussions around literature in a 5th grade ESL social studies class, and a comparison of class discussions in the online vs. face to face environment.

Dr. Lopez was recently awarded the 2009 AERA Bilingual Research SIG Dissertation Award (Third Place) and the 2009 National Association of Bilingual Education Dissertation Award (Second Place).

We are very pleased to have the honor presenting Dr. Lopez as the director of this seminar which is geared towards helping our students successfully complete their TExES EC-6 ESL Generalist exam which is required for certification in that field of teaching.
