Topic Details

Topic:
Mentoring STEM Student Researchers
Description:

Calling all faculty mentors of STEM research students! Join us for this two-part workshop that will focus on best practices of culturally-aware research mentoring. Through a multicultural lens, participants will engage a range of topics to promote a healthy, supportive, and productive research and research training environment for all stakeholders. These two 4-hour sessions will utilize the highly interactive CIMER Entering Mentoring and Multicultural Awareness curriculum, an established, evidence-based, multi-level, and national training program for ensuring both mentor and mentee success. A certificate of training completion and placard will be provided upon completion of both workshop sessions.

New faculty and postdoctoral fellows affiliated with MSEC, U-RISE, South Texas Doctoral Bridge Program, and PREM CIMA are especially invited to participate. To encourage interaction and community within the workshop, participation will be capped at 25.

The following themes are included in the workshops:

• Aligning Expectations
• Addressing Equity and Inclusion
• Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan
• Assessing Understanding
• Fostering Independence
• Maintaining Effective Communication
