Grad Advising 101: Supporting Graduate Students with Recommendations for Competitive Awards and Academic Jobs
Description:

This Grad Advising 101 session will address the critical role that recommenders play in the external funding and job application processes. We will provide guidance about tailoring recommendations to a specific audience and purpose and strategies for crafting a persuasive argument in support of the student. Attendees will also learn about common pitfalls, such as introducing doubt and bias, failing to adequately address required selection criteria, and making formatting errors. Drs. Hilkovitz and Smith will share examples of successful letters and offer their perspectives as national reviewers and search committee members. Whether you are an experienced letter writer or a new graduate advisor, this workshop will improve your ability to support graduate students' applications for funding opportunities and the job market.
