Description:

The purpose of this workshop is to help graduate students become aware of the many powerful aspects of both traditional models for dissemination of scholarship, as well as some of the options in social media and other online tools. Social media innovations can improve scholarly research, communication and networking. Social media also helps scholars identify who is reading their work and connect with others with similar interests. By using the newer tools for measurement, scholars can see research more quickly than traditional academic publishing.

Participants will learn about several aspects of scholarship outside of the classroom:

* Author's rights and copyright issues to consider when managing your scholarly profile in print or online

* Social media for scholars: Some of the tools/tricks and things to be aware of in the online environment

* Understanding Alternative Metrics: how to measure the impact of your work as well as the controversies with measuring impact using social media.

* Other tools for citation management and keeping track of the impact of your research upon the scholarly community.
