Graduate advisors and support staff field many questions from graduate students about funding their studies and research. Yet, advisors often express discomfort discussing financial matters with advisees because of a lack of knowledge about the graduate funding landscape, including sources of funding, appropriate processes and procedures, and the resources available to support graduate student applicants. This workshop will provide graduate advisors and support staff with information about the support services offered by The Graduate College’s external funding coordinators, Dr. Andrea Hilkovitz and Dr. Brian Smith, and the necessary steps students and their faculty mentors should take when pursuing external funding. Drs. Hilkovitz and Smith will offer insight into their approaches to advising graduate students and give attendees practical tips and strategies for helping students to navigate the external funding terrain.
