Description:

You are invited to a Faculty Showcase event on March 1, 2013 at noon on the topic of An Online Revolution: Moving a Large Lecture Course Online. The event is sponsored by Instructional Technologies Support (ITS). Our featured speaker is Mr. Sherwood Bishop who took a face-to-face lecture course with an average enrollment of 250 students, and moved it online. Implementing the course online this past fall took a tremendous amount of preparation and planning as well as the creation of numerous online learning modules, mini-lectures, quizzes and forums.

Bishop had help in re-thinking the course from the ground up from Dr. Liz Strand in Instructional Technologies Support. He started by mapping out his objectives which are now tied directly to evaluation. The process forced him to select out course material that is most important and must be included.

In the online course, students do not attend class, except for proctored written exams. In TRACS, they access readings, assignments, short recorded mini-lectures, as well as study aids and review materials covering every section of the course.

Students can choose to attend any of a number of in-person review sessions held at various times each week. Bishop also holds the traditional office hours and is available via email.

Bishop is a Lecturer in the Department of Finance and Economics at Texas State University, who teaches undergraduate courses.

In this session, Bishop will describe the process of moving the course from a face-to-face to online mode, detailing the challenges he faced along the way. He will also discuss the evolving nature of the course, as he evaluates the course, considers student feedback and makes revisions.

This is a brown bag event, so bring your lunch and come and spend an hour with Mr. Bishop as he shares his valuable experience. You will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Water, soft drinks and sweet and salty snacks will be provided. Plan to arrive by 11:45am or earlier as the program will begin promptly at noon.
