You are invited to a Faculty Showcase event on November 14, 2014 at noon on the topic of Using Game-Based Elements to Hook Big Results. The event is sponsored by Instructional Technologies Support (ITS).

Our featured speakers are Dr. Alex Nagurney, a former Texas State instructor in Psychology, now a faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Patrick Smith, an Instructional Designer from ITS. Dr. Nagurney will join us via video-conferencing technology.

Game-based learning and “gamification” are currently areas of great interest in the field of education, as research shows that these methods can be very effective in engaging and motivating our students. However, the effective implementation of these methods can be challenging, and even somewhat overwhelming.

Nagurney and Smith developed a freshman level Psychology course that employs simple game-based elements to help engage and challenge students, all without requiring a complete overhaul of the faculty’s teaching methodology.

Nagurney and Smith will share the details of the course design, the research behind the choices made in the development of the plan, and specific data gathered from students regarding their perceptions of the learning experience, both before and after the game based elements were introduced. They will discuss further research planned in this area and implications for using similar techniques in other disciplines and distance learning environments.

Following their presentation, they will take questions from the audience.

This is a brown bag event, so bring your lunch and come and spend an hour with our speakers as they share their valuable experience with gamification.

Water, soft drinks and cookies will be provided. Plan to arrive by 11:45am or earlier as the program will begin promptly at noon.
