Topic Details

Topic:
Integrating Information Literacy into the Curriculum
Description:

The complexity and proliferation of information sources requires an organized and integrated approach to learning and applying research, writing, and rhetoric processes. Therefore the ability to recognize, evaluate, and use information, which is the definition of Information Literacy, becomes a critical skill set for students. However, facilitating Information Literacy is not the sole responsibility of any one entity on campus—while librarians help students locate and evaluate sources, writing center tutors help students transform that information into knowledge, and faculty must develop assignments that facilitate meaningful research. To maximize effectiveness, these three entities need to speak to each other.

In this presentation, Jessica McClean, Undergraduate Instruction & Outreach Librarian, will discuss how the library can help students locate and evaluate sources, and Dr. Nancy Wilson (Department of English) and Dr. Deb Balzhiser (Writing Center Director) will explain how the Writing Center helps students transform that information into knowledge and how faculty can develop assignments that facilitate meaningful research.
