Faculty Showcase - Saving Time by Grading with Rubrics
Description:

You are invited to a Faculty Showcase event on February 21, 2014 at noon on the topic of "Saving Time by Grading with Rubrics". The event is sponsored by Instructional Technologies Support (ITS). Our featured speaker is Ms. Laura Ellis-Lai.

Ellis-Lai is a Lecturer in the English Department, who teaches multiple sections of writing-intensive courses. Generally, she would grade six essays, per semester, per student, each running somewhere between 3-5 pages. Providing corrective feedback in the form of written comments on a single student paper would take about 20 minutes.

She began looking into the use of rubrics to see whether she could still provide detailed and specific feedback to her students while speeding up the process of grading.

Over a period of three years, Ellis-Lai has developed rubrics that she feels gives students specific targeted feedback on several important aspects of their writing. The rubrics are available to students in ePortfolio along with their writing assignments.

Ellis-Lai will provide a short presentation on the system she uses, which she says saves her time, and on whether and how it has improved the quality of student writing. She will also take questions from the audience.

This is a brown bag event, so bring your lunch and come and spend an hour with Ms. Ellis-Lai as she shares her valuable experience with rubrics.

Water, soft drinks and cookies will be provided. Plan to arrive by 11:45am or earlier as the program will begin promptly at noon.
